Mad Maggie's Ice Cream

Each Friday, we try something new with a "Flavor of the Week" chosen from suggestions we've received from our customers, friends, and contacts in the ice cream business. Some of these are so popular that they become part of our normal menu offerings. Others are unusual enough that we can't seem to get people to try them!

Have an idea for a great new flavor you'd like to see us offer? Send it to us!  Maybe you'll see it show up as one of our Flavors of the Week!

Here are the past creations:

September 5th, 2003: Snickers
We had the crushed up Snickers candy ready for months, but never found the time to make this flavor. Now that things are gearing down, and we've actually had time to look through our stocks, we said "what the heck", so we made a batch. This is a nice flavor, we used almost twice as many Snickers pieces as called for in the couple of recipes we had, so you get big chunks in every bite.
August 22, 2003: Chocolate Cookie Dough
Back in May, during our first week of operation, a young boy suggested this flavor. I thought it was a neat idea, but never seemed to have the time to make it. Well, I finally tried it, and now it's a minor hit -- not one of our biggest sellers, but if we run out, people keep asking for it, so we've added it to our regular lineup.

Rich, chocolate ice cream, with chocolate chips, and cookie dough pieces mixed in. If you know that little boy who suggested this, please ask him to say hi next time he's at the stand -- we owe him a cone on the house!

August 15, 2003: Coffee Oreo
I love coffee ice cream, and I saw this flavor offered at another stand in the area, so decided to give it a try. I think the thing that makes this flavor exceptionally different than what others offer is that our base coffee flavor is what I like to call an adult coffee flavor -- bold, strong, and not too sweet. Definitely not the mellow kid's coffee that you'll find at many other stands. The Oreo cookie pieces make a perfect flavor complement.

(I liked this flavor so much, it became a regular offering of ours late in the season.)

August 10th, 2003: Wild Berry
This was done as a special Flavor-of-the-week, as the fresh native blueberries at our favorite local farmstand, Turkey Hill Farm, in Haverhill, MA, are in peak season at this time of year.

We started out making straight blueberry, using fresh, handpicked blueberries from Turkey Hill, but the flavor just wasn't strong enough. So at the last minute, we added some blackberry and red raspberry flavorings. The result was not bad! We'll try this again next season, I think we'll be able to get it super with a few flavor adjustments.

(Turkey Hill is also the best Christmas tree farm in the area!)

August 8th, 2003: Peach
A family reunion caused us to miss our flavor of the week for a week there, but we are getting back in the swing of things here. This week's creation is Peach. We used fresh Georgia Peaches, hand peeled and mixed in a light vanilla base. Overall, I think this flavor needs a little more zing, but I've had several people tell me that they thought it was very good.
July 25th, 2003: Banana
I was all set to make Red Raspberry Chip this week, but instead our flavor of the week is Banana! Why? Well, it's for the same reason that the "A" in Mad Maggie's stands for Amanda (Maggie's choice) rather than Alison (my choice) -- you just can't win an argument with a pregnant woman! ;^)

A friend of the family, who is "very" pregnant came by and chastised me for not making banana after I told her I'd try it a few weeks back. So I scrapped my plans (I was a little bit "a-scared" of messing up the fresh red raspberries anyway...) and made Banana. We used fresh, extremely ripe bananas, along with a couple of other secrets. Banana is not one of my personal favorite flavors, but I've got to admit it tastes pretty good -- hopefully the banana ice cream lovers among our customers agree!

One other thing: Our Pregnant Princess who instigated this week's flavor came by and ordered hers with chopped walnuts -- that sounds like a nice combination to me, so maybe the next batch of this will be Banana Walnut.

July 18th, 2003: Mocha Almond Fudge
We had some more interesting suggestions to try, but this was one that had been requested by a few folks, was an easy one to make, and we were a little pressed for time in just keeping our standard flavors in stock. So we took the easy road and made this one!

We used a light coffee base, added some high quality cocoa, and mixed in a little of a "secret ingredient" to mellow out the taste a little. In this we mixed in slightly chopped almonds, then added a fudge streak. All in all, a nice flavor, with a few more tweaks this could become a regular.

July 11th, 2003: Flibbertigibbet!
Funny name for a great flavor! Flibbertigibbet is the name of a homemade chocolate shop next door to our stand. It's run by a husband and wife team of Bob and Mary Ferrari and they make some wonderful chocolates. They gave us a box of some delicious toffee, and we knew just what to do with it! We started with a butter toffee base, a hint of coffee flavor, and stirred in a bunch of chopped up toffee chunks. The result is delightful -- a toffee lover's dream!

Make sure you visit Bob and Mary's store and tell them what a wonderful flavor they allowed us to create!

July 4th, 2003: Old Glory
It's strawberry season here in New England, and the fresh blueberries are just starting to become ripe, so we took a batch of vanilla ice cream, added in fresh (hand picked by our daughter Amanda and niece Melissa) strawberries and juicy blueberries, and ended up with a red, white, and blue ice cream for Independence Day. This one's a little unusual, as the fruit became a bit icy, but it's still a very refreshing flavor.
June 27th, 2003: Peppermint Pattie
A couple of members of our team have been clamoring for this one, so we gave it a try. This is a vanilla/mint base, and we added chopped up pieces of York Peppermint Patties. The result is similar to our Mint Chocolate Chip, but with a more zingy peppermint taste, and less of a chocolate flavor. Not bad at all!
June 20th, 2003: Peanut Butter Delight
We weren't sure exactly how to make this, as we didn't have a recipe. So a few of us put our heads (and taste buds) together over a big jar of Skippy, a box of Reese's peanut butter cups, and various other tricks of the trade, and came up with something we thought was pretty good.

We ended up with a peanut butter base flavored with ground up Reese's cups and Skippy peanut butter. To this, we added some special flavorings, then mixed in chunks of peanut butter cups and topped it off with a streak of peanut butter sauce. The results are incredible!

Our customers seem to agree, as we made 6 tubs of this in the first week, and it's still going strong. (We modestly report that one customer proclaimed it as the best peanut butter cup flavor he's ever tasted!) Looks like this one's going to go from "Flavor of the Week" to one of our regular offerings!

June 13th, 2003: Raspberry Harmony
A black raspberry base, with a little added red raspberry flavoring. To this, we added dark and white chocolate chunks, then swirled in some chocolate variegate. (Hey, it was raining, we were bored...)

The result was great, but we probably could have gotten by without the chips!
